About the CRPE
In 1965, a group of Engineers being members of the Institution of Engineers Mauritius (IEM), made a request to the Legislative Assembly (LA) through a private motion to make IEM the body to regulate the profession of Engineers in Mauritius.
During the debates at the LA, advice was received that as IEM was a learned organization, there would be the need to create a Council for Engineers under the aegis of the then Ministry of Works (MoW).
COUNCIL COMPOSITION
The CRPE was created under the Registered Professional Engineers Council Act (RPEC) of 1965.
The Council was constituted of the following members:
1. Two representatives from the Institution of Engineers of Mauritius (IEM)
2. One representative for the Société de Technologie Agricole et Sucrière de L’ile Maurice, now replaced by Business Mauritius.
3. Two representatives from the Public Sector representing the Ministry for Infrastructure (one Civil Engineer and one Mechanical Engineer)
4. One representative of the Central Electricity Board (CEB)
The six members would elect a Chairperson and a Vice Chairperson and appoint a Registrar for administrating the Council’s business.

REGISTRATION
The Council started to register Graduates in Engineering satisfying the requirements of the Act in terms of Engineering Education. (Note: in 1965, Mauritius was still a colony of Great Britain, and most of our Graduates were studying in the UK or other commonwealth countries)
The Council realized that it was necessary for new Engineering Graduates to undergo some training after their graduation and the RPEC Act was amended in 1967 to include a minimum of two years practice under the supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer prior to applying with CRPE to become a Professional Engineer.
OUR LEADERSHIP
Members of The Council are reconstituted around July of every two years by the Ministry for Infrastructure. The mandate of the members is for two years but members may be re-elected.
OUR HISTORY
The Registrar of CRPE had, since its creation in 1965, always been a part-time Engineer employed in the Government Sector and CRPE had always had an office within the premises of the Ministry of Works, Phoenix.
Subsequently, due to an increasing volume of work, the new Council decided to move to a more convivial office in Ebene and to also appoint a full time Registrar. CRPE is also in the process of digitalizing its operation and is ready to launch a new website.
The Registrar together with ethe Administrative Secretary are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the affairs of the CRPE. The Registrar also represents the interests of the CRPE on various committees, including the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB). He is also responsible for proposing new policy changes and acts as the secretary to the council meetings.

Having always trusted in the strength and dedication of our members, our council will endeavor to support the engineering profession with the most conducive framework. We hope to move towards a path of excellence and engineer a better Mauritius together.
