The Council of Registered Professional Engineers of Mauritius (CRPE) wishes to inform the public, higher education institutions, prospective engineering students, and all stakeholders that the Council approved a revised framework for entry requirements into engineering degree programmes in Mauritius at its meeting held on 27 August 2026.
Background
The CRPE is the regulatory body established under the Council of Registered Professional Engineers Act (No. 49 of 1966, as amended). The Council ascertains that applicants’ engineering degree programmes meet the requirements of Section 13 of the Act for registration as a Professional Engineer.
Following a comprehensive review informed by international best practices and the Washington Accord standards, the Council has approved a harmonised framework to ensure consistency, transparency, and academic rigour across all engineering programmes offered by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius.
Approved Framework
1. Primary Entry Route: UCAS Tariff Points
The minimum acceptable entry requirement is 96 UCAS Tariff Points. Institutions may set higher requirements, up to 144 UCAS Tariff Points or more, depending on the competitiveness of their programmes and the academic standards they wish to maintain.
Equivalent qualifications include:

2. Subject-Specific Requirements
Applicants must have studied Mathematics and Physics at A-Level or equivalent, with a minimum grade of C. For Chemical Engineering programmes, Chemistry is accepted in place of Physics.
3. Alternative Entry Pathway: Foundation Programme
Applicants who do not meet the direct entry requirements may enrol in a one-year Foundation Programme (Engineering Pathway) approved by the Higher Education Commission. Successful completion guarantees progression to Year 1 of an engineering degree programme.
4. Remedial Support and Resit Provisions
Students admitted with grades lower than ‘C’ in Mathematics and/or Physics may be permitted to re-sit the GCE A-Level examinations in the specific subject(s) during the first academic year. Students must demonstrate having achieved the equivalent of 96 UCAS Tariff Points by the end of the first year.
5. Widening Participation
The framework is designed to open admission to universities for a wider range of students, both locally and from the African continent, while maintaining the academic rigour necessary for professional registration.
Application to HEIs
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has been requested to communicate this framework to all public and private HEIs offering engineering programmes in Mauritius. HEIs are required to:
- Publish the revised entry requirements on their websites
- Provide factual information to prospective students regarding professional registration requirements
- Ensure that programmes are accredited by a body recognised by the CRPE
- Ensure that student intake is commensurate with programme capacity and quality assurance standards
Accreditation Requirements
The CRPE continues to recognise engineering degrees for eligibility purposes only when the programme is accredited by an accredited body recognised by the CRPE, including:
- Washington Accord signatory members
- Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) of Mauritius
- The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) UK
- Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
Prospective students are strongly advised to consult the CRPE before applying to any university to ensure that their intended qualification is recognised for the purpose of professional registration.
Washington Accord Alignment
The revised framework aligns with the Washington Accord’s objective of mutual recognition of accredited engineering degree programmes. The Institution of Engineers Mauritius (IEM) is a Provisional Member of the Washington Accord, with full Signatory status tentatively scheduled for 2031.
